Sometimes a CDL replacement is required because the hard card gets damaged or worn to the point that it can no longer be read properly.

Occasionally, commercial drivers may need to replace CDL license credentials because of theft. If your license and/or wallet are stolen, ALEA recommends reporting the theft to your local law enforcement agency. Although reporting a stolen CDL is not required by law, getting a police report is for your own protection. Even after you obtain your Alabama CDL replacement, the thief can use your old license for identity theft or other fraudulent purposes.

Documents Required to Replace a CDL in Alabama

When finding out how to replace a CDL license in Alabama, you will notice that certain documents are required for each method of replacement. To replace CDL license credentials, you will need the following documents:

• A primary form of photo ID
• A secondary form of identification
• Social Security card
• If a non-citizen, additional secondary documents

Primary ID for CDL replacement include an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, a U.S. passport, an Alabama driver license or ID card. You may also use a Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of Birth Abroad.

Secondary identification documents used for CDL replacement may include an employee or student ID card, a military or military dependent ID card, a driver license or ID card issued in another state, a marriage license, a Veterans Administration card, medical insurance card or Selective Service card.

Additional secondary documents for non-citizens applying for a DMV CDL replacement include a valid visa and supporting documents authorizing U.S. presence for 160 days or longer, a valid I-94 arrival/departure record issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and an employment authorization document presented along with a valid Social Security card.

How to Replace a Alabama CDL in Person

To replace a CDL license in person, visit your county’s probate office or county license commission office. Hours of operation vary by location, but most accept CDL replacement requests between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Counties with large populations have more than one location to choose from.

When you apply for a duplicate CDL in person, there is no need to fill out a specific application form. Simply bring the required documents from the lists above along with a form of payment. The payment types accepted for CDL replacement fees will vary by location, but most probate offices and county license commission offices accept credit and debit cards. You will receive a temporary CDL replacement license that is printed on the spot. This document will be valid for 30 days and should be used until your new hard card license arrives by mail, usually well before the temporary CDL expires.

How to Replace an Alabama CDL Online

Online DMV CDL replacement in Alabama is available through the Alabama Online Driver License Issuance webpage. Your DMV CDL replacement request online can only be processed if you have a valid credit card and a working printer to print your 30-day temporary commercial driver license. If you need to add or remove CDL endorsements or change your address, you must apply for a duplicate CDL in person instead of using the online option.

The online CDL replacement form will require your full legal name, CDL license number, your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Once your account has been found and you pay the CDL replacement fees, you will be taken to a page where you can print your 30-day temporary license. Use this document until your hard card arrives by mail, usually within 30 days. How to Replace an Alabama CDL by Mail

You may apply for a duplicate CDL by mail If you meet certain qualifications. This option is reserved for the following individuals who are temporarily living outside of Alabama:

• Military personnel and their dependents residing out of state
• College students attending school full-time out of state
• Employees working temporarily out of state
• Missionaries serving out of state
• Applicants under a doctor’s care out of state

To qualify for an AL CDL replacement by mail, you must have obtained your credential within the past four years. Note that you may also apply for a duplicate CDL online if you prefer. Download and print the application form. When filling out the CDL replacement form, be sure to complete all sections and provide the requested proof supporting the reason you are out of state.
