How to Get a Commercial Drivers License in Utah
A Utah CDL, also known as a commercial drivers license, is mandatory in the state if you plan to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). A CMV is defined as a motor vehicle that is used in commerce to transport property or passengers with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 26,000 pounds, or a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of over 26,000 pounds, including a towed unit with a gross weight rating of over 10,000 pounds.
To obtain a CDL license, you must first be issued a CDL permit through the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver License Division (DLD). To do so, you will need to take and pass a written knowledge test. After you take and pass the subsequent road skills test, you will be issued a CDL. Depending on the type of CMV you plan to operate, you may also need to add endorsements to your license, and take additional written and road skills tests.
