Note that drivers are required to complete the AL drivers license change of address within a certain time period after their move. To learn more about the procedure to update address data on driving credentials in Alabama, read the sections outlined below.
Instances Where You Must Change Your Address on Your Alabama Drivers License
Changing a driving license address in Alabama is a transaction that is generally finalized by drivers who update their street and/or mailing addresses. The procedure to make changes to DLD address information, however, is also completed for other reasons. For instance, drivers may apply for a DMV license change of address in AL if their record contains an incorrect address and/or they were issued a credential that displays the wrong address.
In any case, it is important to note that motorists who move to Alabama from another U.S. state also technically complete the address change procedure when they transfer their out of state license.
Alabama Drivers License Address Change Time Limits
The procedure to change a driving license address must be completed within 30 days of any changes of a residential and/or mailing address. Motorists who fail to change the address on their drivers licenses may be subjected to certain consequences, such as traffic citations for driving with an incorrect credential.
However, if you do not update your address with the state DPS on time, you may also fail to receive important documents and correspondences mailed to you by the department. For example, motorists who complete the drivers license renewal and replacement procedures prior to changing their DMV license address in AL may not receive their new credential at the correct address.
How to Change Your Address on Your Alabama Drivers License by Mail
Drivers can easily complete a driving license change of address by submitting the DPS Driver License or Identification Card Change of Address form to the department’s Licensing Services Division in Montgomery. Note that the state DPS does not currently offer the option to change your drivers license address online via its internet services portal. Prior to updating driving credential address information with the mail-in form, applicants must ensure they correctly fill out the application with the following information:
- Their full name and date of birth
- Their driver’s license number
- Their new street and/or mailing address
- Their phone number and email address
- Their official signature and the date they fill out the form
After receiving your request to change address on a DMV license, the state DPS will update your driver record with the new residential and/or mailing address. Note that, if you complete the AL license change of address by mail, you will not receive a duplicate credential that contains your new address. You will be able to change the address displayed on your license only if you submit your request in person when applying for a replacement driver’s license.
How to Change Your Address on Your Alabama Drivers License in Person
Another method to change a drivers license address is to submit the standard address change form in person through a local driver license office. Motorists who only choose to update address information only on department records will not be required to submit additional documentation or pay a fee. However, if you would like the AL DMV license change of address to be reflected on a new credential, then you will be required to complete the standard driver’s license replacement procedure.
When replacing a license to drive in person, applicants are typically required to submit an additional identification document and proof of a Social Security Number, as well as payment for the replacement fee. If you are changing your driving license address and obtaining a duplicate credential in person, you may also be able to upgrade a standard license to a STAR ID credential, which complies with the standards of the REAL ID Act. In such cases, motorists will be required to submit the full documentation set, which includes proofs of identity and date of birth, Social Security Number and state residency.
How to Transfer Your Drivers License as a New Alabama Resident
New state residents can complete the Alabama drivers license change of address when they transfer their out-of-state credential after their move within the state. Note that drivers must transfer their out-of-state credentials within 30 days of moving in Alabama. The standard procedure to change a drivers license address as a new state resident and apply for an original license to drive generally involves the following steps:
- Surrender your out-of-state credential.
- Present the supporting identification and Social Security Number documentation.
- Pass the vision examination.
- Take the knowledge and road skills tests (if required to do so).
- Pay the applicable fees.
If you are applying for a STAR ID credential, you will be required to submit different types of supporting documents. Inquire with the state DPS about the acceptable REAL ID documentation.
Alabama DMV Address Change Fees
Motorists will be required to pay a fee when changing their driving license addresses in Alabama only if they obtain a duplicate credential with the new address as well. Therefore, the mail-in DMV license change of address can be completed free of charge.
New state residents applying for their first Alabama license to drive, however, will be required to pay the full licensing costs.
