How to Renew Your Drivers License in Oklahoma
Oklahoma drivers license renewal applications must be submitted in person at a local DMV office. Depending on the applicant’s eligibility, licenses may be renewed up to one year before or after the license card’s expiration date. Licenses that have expired for more than three years cannot be renewed. Exceptions may apply.
An OK DMV license renewal is typically required every four years. Depending on your age, you may be required to renew your license in shorter intervals. REAL ID cards are not currently available in Oklahoma. DMV fees must be paid in full and are non-refundable.
Eligibility for Drivers License Renewal in Oklahoma

All of Oklahoma’s drivers license renewal requirements must be met before a new license can be issued. Residents are eligible to renew their licenses after the expiration date. However, only United States citizens are able to renew a license within this grace period without having to provide additional information.
Citizens and non-citizens with an expired drivers license for more than one year must present proof of legal presence to the DMV before it can be renewed. If you have submitted proof of legal presence to the DMV since November 1, 2007, you are not required to resubmit it. United States citizens may use a state-certified birth certificate as proof of identity and legal presence. License renewals for licenses that have already expired are only processed in specific DMV locations.
Instances When You Cannot Renew Drivers Licenses in Oklahoma
A drivers license renewal application cannot be processed if a license has been expired for more than three years. Furthermore, residents who have expired drivers licenses for more than one year but less than three years cannot submit a renewal application without providing the approved documents mentioned in the section above. Non-citizens of the United States cannot renew a license without providing proof of legal presence. In some cases, applicants must visit a DMV test center and retake the state’s examinations. If you do need to take the driving test, you can prepare by taking a practice exam.
How early can you renew your drivers license in Oklahoma?
Drivers license renewal reminders are optional in Oklahoma. Residents have the choice to sign up online and be emailed a reminder 45 days before the license is set to expire. Applicants are welcome to renew their licenses as soon as the renewal notice has been received. Mailed-in applications from out-of-state residents may be submitted one year prior to the license expiration date. Restrictions apply.
Where to Renew Drivers Licenses in Oklahoma
Oklahoma residents must visit a drivers license office in person to renew valid or expired cards. While the state does not allow applicants to renew drivers licenses online, mailed-in applications are available to Oklahoma residents who are temporarily out of state. All drivers must bring the correct documentation to the DMV when applying for a renewal.
How do I renew my license in person?
Residents applying for a drivers license renewal before or after the expiration date must follow separate guidelines. Follow the below steps to apply in person if you are a United States citizen and your license has not expired.
- Visit the OK DMV.
- Provide one of the following items:
- Proof of identity, such as a valid United States passport or birth certificate; or
- A finger print comparison, if available.
- Pay the drivers license renewal fee.
Citizens of the United States renewing an expired drivers license must provide proof of identity to receive a new license. Non-citizens must present proof of legal presence, such as an alien registration card or a foreign passport with an I-94 card. Once issued, the word “temporary” will be printed on the front of all licenses belonging to non-citizens. Furthermore, the card will only be valid for four years or the length of time the applicant is allowed to stay in the country, whichever is shorter.
Military & Out of State Drivers License Renewal in Oklahoma
DMV license renewal applications may be submitted by mail if you are temporarily living outside of Oklahoma. However, your license cannot be expired and must be in good standing to apply. Furthermore, you must have a current, up-to-date Oklahoma address on file at the DMV to be eligible. Residents may update their addresses online before submitting renewal applications.
Applicants cannot submit a renewal by mail if they have used this method during the last cycle. Follow the below steps to send a drivers license renewal application by mail.
- Complete the drivers license renewal A current OK residential address must be included. This address will be visible on your new license. In addition, an out-of-state mailing address must be included. Your new card will be sent to this address.
- Include proof of identity in two forms, such as a United States passport and a military ID card. Copies must be sent in place of the original.
- Include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
- Include a check for the drivers license renewal fee of $38.50. Checks must be made payable to the Department of Public Safety.
- Send the above items to the below address.

DMV license renewal applications may be submitted by absent members of the armed forces but are not required. A valid license held by an active member of the military stationed outside of Oklahoma will remain valid for the duration of his or her service and 60 days after he or she returns to Oklahoma. After which, applicants must submit a DMV license renewal application to the DMV.
Oklahoma REAL ID Drivers License Renewal
DMV license renewal applications cannot be used to obtain REAL ID cards in Oklahoma. Although REAL ID cards are not currently available in the state, they will become available in the Spring of 2020.
Residents will be required to have REAL ID cards when boarding a domestic flight after 2020 if they are not carrying a passport. Extensions are being sought by Oklahoma’s state government.
