Can I renew my commercial drivers license online?

Can I request a certified driver’s record online?

Can I take the DMV written test online?

Can I use my state CDL anywhere in the United States?
Yes. Traffic patrols will recognize the validity of your license to drive commercial vehicles all across the country. However, if you are younger than 21, you will be limited to your state s boarders. Something else to be mindful of is your CDL insurance coverage. You will need that to cover you wherever you plan to use your commercial driver s license.

Can somebody else renew my registration for me?
Yes, another individual can renew expired car registration on your behalf. Make sure you provide that person with the copy of the cars registration certificate or the renewal notice, the fee and proof of insurance, like your Social Security card or SSN. They will also need to have some form of identification on their person.

Do boats need to be registered?

Do I need to attend traffic school if I get a speeding ticket?
Yes, you do. In order to be allowed to take the Basic Driver Improvement Course, you will need to notify the court before attending the course within 30 days of receiving the ticket. You can only take one traffic school course every 12 months and no more than five times every ten years.

Do I need to cancel my insurance if I am moving to another state?
Yes, you do. If you are not going to reside in Florida anymore, then you will be required to obtain car insurance quotes in your new state. Just make sure that your new insurance kicks in as soon as your Florida insurance is removed. You do not want to violate your new state’s auto coverage laws.

Do I need to file a police report if my license was lost or stolen?
It is recommended to report these incidents to the police to avoid identify theft. When you obtain a Florida duplicate drivers license, make sure to provide the police report at the DMV office to have the replacement fee waived.

Do I need to take a drivers ed course?
Although you cannot obtain a drivers permit online, you are still required to take a driver s ed course. Before applying for a license, all drivers must complete a driver s education course called Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE). Does my vehicle qualify for a smog inspection?
Since July 2000, the state of Florida removed the car inspections and you are not required to get your car for smoke inspection. However, Florida gives a reward to certified EPA vehicles. How can I avoid a license suspension if I choose not to insure my vehicle?
Before your insurance is cancelled, you can return your car registration and plate to the FL DHSMV or Tax Collectors office to avoid a Florida drivers license suspension. If you choose not to, your drivers license will be suspended.

How can I get a veteran designation on my ID card?
You will need to provide a copy of your DD214 or permitted discharge documents. There is a $2 charge as long as you surrender your ID card. You will not have to pay the normal replacement fee, but you are required to take your FL ID card. If you do not take your ID card, you still can get your veteran ID card by paying the $25 replacement fee. Fees may vary.

How can I obtain a copy of the driver manual?
If while preparing for your drivers license application you decide that you would like to review the driver manual, then you can view it on the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website. Once there, you will be able to download an English or Spanish version for your convenience.

To further prepare for the written exam that you will have to pass to get your drivers license, it is recommended to use the Driver s Study Guide, as well as the Driver s Practice Test.

How can I pay for my traffic or parking ticket?
When you get a traffic ticket, you have two options for traffic ticket fines: Plead Guilty or Plead not Guilty.

Plead Guilty

How can I renew my drivers license?
In the state of Florida, you can complete your drivers license renewal online, in person and by mail. However, some factors may require you to renew your license in person if, for example, your last renewal was completed online.

Online

You can avoid lines renewing your FL drivers license online with the GoRenew website. To renew online, you should be able to pay with a debit or credit card.

In person

Visit the closest FL DHSMV office, you can find one using the convenient DHSMV locator, and bring:

  • Proof of identification, like your U.S. passport or birth certificate.
  • Proof of Social Security Number, such as your Social Security card.
  • Proof of residential address, like a utility bill or mail from government agencies.

If you recently changed your address, bring proper documentation as proof of the change, such as a utility bill, mail from a financial institution or a W-2 form. For a change of name, you can bring your marriage certificate or divorce decree, Social Security card or a courts document as proof.

How can I renew my vehicle registration?
There are three methods to complete car registration renewal: online, in person or by mail.

You can only renew your registration if your vehicle has proper Florida insurance. If you dont have coverage or your insurance does not meet state minimums, you wont be allowed to renew your registration.

Online

You are eligible to renew online only if the DHSMV has already your proof of insurance on file. If not, you will have to go to an office and present your proof of insurance. Military members can use the online service to renew their registration up to three months before the expiration date.

If you qualify to renew online, visit FL DHSMV website and complete the process. The system will guide you through the steps.

You will need:

Your driver’s license number, vehicle license plate number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or the transaction number listed on your current registration certificate.

  • Your date of birth.
  • The last four digits of your Social Security Number.
  • A credit card to pay your renewal fee.

In person

If you wish to renew in person, you will have to go to the closest FL DHSMV office.

You will need to bring:

  • Your renewal notice or current registration certificate.
  • Your drivers license or FL ID card.
  • Proof of insurance for your vehicle.

At the office you will be provided with new stickers and a registration certificate.

By Mail

You can only renew by mail if you received a renewal notice indicating that you are eligible to use this method. Follow the instructions on the notice and send payment to the closest FL DHSMV office.

How can I transfer a car title if I have a lien on it?
If you have a lien on your vehicle, you will need to first pay it off before you are allowed to complete a Florida car title transfer. If the lien has been satisfied, then the lien holder will need to make mention of this on the title. Visit a nearby local tax county office with the title and the new owner of the vehicle you are transferring ownership to.

How do I apply for a commercial drivers license?
The process of obtaining your CDL license requires you to take a series of tests based on the class of CDL you would like to obtain and the endorsements it requires. It is recommended that you always make an appointment with the DSHMV before visiting an agency. To find a DSHMV location near you, use our DHSMV locator.

You can only request a commercial drivers license if you are over 18 years of age. Commercial drivers under 21 years of age are only allowed to drive within Florida. Before applying, you will have to pass:

  • A knowledge test and a road test.
  • A basic skills test.
  • A pre-trip test.
  • A combinations vehicle test (for Class A only).
  • A hazardous materials test, if you expect to drive a vehicle transporting hazardous materials.
  • An air brakes test, if you plan to drive a vehicle with air brakes.
  • A tank vehicle test, if you need to drive a vehicle hauling liquid or gaseous materials in a tank.
  • A school bus test, for school bus drivers only.
  • A doubles/triples test if you are going to drive a vehicle that pulls double or triple trailers.

At the driver license office you will have to provide the following:

  • One document as proof of identity, such as a U.S. passport or a birth certificate.
  • Your Social Security card, a paycheck with your Social Security Number, a W-2 form or any 1099 form as proof of Social Security.
  • Two documents to prove that you reside in Florida such as a deed, a Florida Voter Registration Card, a utility hook up or mail from any government agency.

If you are applying for a hazardous materials endorsement, you will need to submit your fingerprints and get a background check as well. To be well-prepared, you may find it suitable to review the CDL Practice Test.

How do I apply for a disabled person parking placard or plates?
When you are getting car registration, you can request this type of plate at your closest Florida DHSMV office and have a valid disabled parking permit to get this kind of plates.

You would need to:

  • Surrender your current plate
  • Fill out and present an Application for Disabled Person Parking Permit
  • Present a medical certification that you should have requested within the past 12 months. The certification must be signed by a nurse practitioner, podiatrist, osteopath, physician or chiropractor.
  • Take your current Florida drivers license or ID card as well, unless your physician proves that you cannot go to the FL DHSMV office to get one.
  • Pay a $15 fee if the permit is temporary, but if the placard is permanent, there will be no charge. Keep in mind that fees may vary.

You are allowed to send the information by mail only if you submitted the application materials in the past 12 months and now you need to re-apply for this placard.

You have to renew your plate’s registration every one or two years. The expiration date on the new plates is the same as in your old standard ones.

First, you need to check if you are eligible to get a Florida drivers license. You qualify if:

How do I apply for a learner’s permit?
The minimum age to get your drivers permit is 15 years old. You can only apply in person at a driver license office. To find a driver license office location near you, visit our DMV locator here.

To get your driving permit in Florida, you will first need to complete Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) before applying for a learners permit in person at a DMV. This course can be obtained from approved private providers or in some high schools or through an online drivers ed class available here. Check with your county’s School Board to find schools that offer the TLSAE.

After completing your TSLAE, you should schedule an appointment for a knowledge test at a driver license office or complete the permit test online. To be best prepared, it is recommended that you study the Drivers Study Guide, as well as the Drivers Practice Test. If you choose to take the test in person at a driver license office make sure you bring the following items with you on the day of your test:

  • Your TSLAE completion certificate.
  • A parental consent form. One of your parents has to sign the form at the driver license office. If they cannot go, for whatever reason, the signature must be notarized.
  • One document as proof of your identity. For example, a birth certificate, or a U.S. passport.
  • Your Social Security card, or a Denial Notice from the Social Security Administration.
  • Two official documents that state your current Florida address as proof of FL residence, like utility bills or bank statements. You can get these documents from your parents if you are under 18 years of age.
  • $48 to pay the driver’s license and learner’s permit fee (fee may vary). Cash or check only.

If you complete the knowledge test online, bring a copy of the knowledge test completion confirmation to the driver license office in addition to the rest of the bulleted items listed above.

Besides the knowledge test, you will also be required to pass a vision and a hearing test and then, you will be issued a learner’s permit that you can use with certain restrictions.

How do I apply for a motorcycle license?
If you already have a FL driver s license, you can apply for a motorcycle endorsement to your current license or, if you don t have a driver s license yet, you can request a Florida motorcycle license.

If you already have a FL driver s license, the requirements for a motorcycle endorsement are:

  • Be at least 16 years of age, and in case you are under 18 years old, have a Learners Permit for a year without traffic convictions.
  • Have a Class E Florida Driver s license.
  • Have the Basic Rider Course completed
  • $7 endorsement fee.

If you don t already have a FL driver s license, the requirements for FL motorcycle driving licenses, are the same as the requirements stated above with the only difference that you are not required to have a Class E FL License.

Since Florida drivers records are public, anyone can get access to them to check your driving history. Some information is not revealed in public driving records, such as your Social Security Number. How do I obtain car registration?
If you bought your car at an authorized car dealership, the seller will take care of car registration and titling. Ask if the dealership uses the Electronic Temporary Registration (ETR) and the Electronic Filing System (EFS), in which case you can also get your temporary license plates at the same place. The dealer has 30 days to transfer the title and registration to your name. Call the DHSMV if the transfer is not completed within a month.

If you bought your car from a private party, you will need to complete all the paperwork yourself. Make sure you fill out a Bill of Sale and submit it to the tax collectors office. It is recommendable that you keep a copy for your records.

If it is your first offense, you need to show proof of the DUI school enrollment at the Administrative Reviews Office in order to be considered for hardship license.
