Am I required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle?

Yes. After getting a motorcycle license in Massachusetts, you and your passenger must wear a helmet at all times. Additionally, you must wear goggles, eyeglasses or a protective face shield. An exception to this is if your motorcycle comes with a wind shield or screen.

Are there times I won’t be allowed to renew registration?

You will not be able to renew vehicle registration if you have any outstanding parking tickets, excise tax bills, abandoned vehicle offenses or have failed to pay child support. If any of these issues apply to you, they must be first resolved before you can proceed with registration renewal. You will also not be allowed to renew if your registration was lost, damaged or stolen before it is time for renewal. In these instances, you must get a replacement car registration.

Can I have different addresses on my driver license and my vehicle registration?

When updating your RMV records, it is best to keep all your Massachusetts address changing information current. Fortunately, you use the MA RMV Change of Address Form 10094 to update numerous driving documents.

Can I keep the car insurance I have from my previous state of residence?

No, if you live in Massachusetts, you are required to get car insurance in the new state. In addition, you must also meet the new state’s coverage requirements.

No. The state of Massachusetts requires drivers who are renewing CDL credentials to do so in person at a local RMV office.

Can I take the DMV written test online?

Yes, there is a computer version of the written drivers test available. Drivers can take a drivers ed class online to prepare for the exam, and online practice tests are also available.

Can I use my state CDL anywhere in the United States?

As long as you have a CDL interstate license and are abiding by the driving rules and regulations of other states, then you can use your commercial driving license across the country. A driver must be at least 21 years old to drive between states with a CDL.

Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter or moped?

You must have a valid MA Class M drivers license, other class of license or learners permit in order to operate a moped or scooter in the state of Massachusetts. You cannot legally operate these vehicles without such credentials.

Do I need to attend traffic school if I get a speeding ticket?

The state of Massachusetts does not allow drivers to attend traffic school in order to have their ticket dismissed. However, defensive driving school can be used to remove points from your driving record.

Yes, if you are in the process of moving to a different state, you will need to cancel your insurance for car. However, you should only do so once you have registered your vehicle at your new residential destination.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles strongly encourages drivers who have lost drivers license credentials or had it stolen to report this incident to the proper, local authorities.

Do I need to take a drivers ed course?

Yes. In order to obtain your Junior Operator license in Massachusetts, you must take a drivers education course. This program requires 30 hours of classroom instruction, along with 12 hours of â€œbehind-the-wheelâ€ training, and six hours of â€œin-carâ€ experience while observing other students.

Additionally, you must fulfill either 40 hours of driving with a parent or legal guardian. There is also the option of completing 30 hours of supervised driving if you have taken a drivers skills development course already.

Your parent or guardian must also participate in two hours of your driver s ed course.

Do I need to turn in my damaged car title?

Yes. If you have a damaged car title, you should turn it in at a local RMV branch at your earliest convenience. The original vehicle title will no longer be valid when you receive a replacement.

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog inspection?

Yes, most vehicles in Massachusetts are required to undergo a smog check and emissions testing. However, certain vehicles may be exempt, including the following:

Your traffic or parking ticket should contain information about where and how to pay it. For example, when it comes to parking infractions, you will be required to pay the ticket to the municipality where your ticket was issued. To pay traffic tickets, however, you have the option to pay for your citation either online or by mail.

How can I renew my drivers license?

The state of Massachusetts requires you to renew your driver s license in person. In some instances, drivers may be eligible to renew drivers licenses online.

In person

To begin the process of renewing your license in person, pay a visit to your local RMV full service office. Upon meeting with a driver s license representative, you will be asked to present the following:

A filled out Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application
Payment for a renewal fee
Proof of identity
Proof of date of birth, signature and MA residence (if necessary)

How do I apply for a commercial drivers license?

Drivers who are 21 or older may apply to obtain an interstate CDL license. However, those drivers who are between 18 and 20 years old can only apply for an intrastate CDL license, which allows them to operate a vehicle only within the state of Massachusetts.

You will have to complete your application process at an RMV office by presenting the following:

Proof of date of birth
Proof of signature
Proof of Massachusetts residency
Proof of Social Security Number
A completed Initial CDL Application (if obtaining a CDL permit)
Payment for any necessary fee

In order to obtain your CDL permit, you must pass a written exam and a vision screening exam. Your permit will be good for a period of two years. Thereafter you will be granted the opportunity to apply for a standard CDL license. A road skills test for the commercial vehicle you wish to operate will be required during this time.

How do I apply for a drivers license?

In order to apply for your MA drivers license, there is a set of requirements you must meet. They include the following:

Pass a road skills test. Keep in mind that to pass this test, you must also present your filled out Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application, your Class D permit, a sponsor (who is at least 21 years old, has a license and has been driving for a year) and the vehicle in which you wish to use.
Present proof of date of birth, MA residence and Social Security Number. Only original documents will be accepted.

How do I apply for a learner’s permit?

The state of Massachusetts requires individuals who are 16 to apply for their learners permit in person. Upon your visit to the local DMV office, you should be aware of the following:

You will have to present a filled out Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application. A parent or legal guardian will be required to sign if you are under 18.
You will need to pass a vision exam, along with a written exam.
You will need to pay a $30 fee.

How do I apply for a motorcycle license?

If you are at least 16 years old, you are eligible to apply for a MA motorcycle license. It s important to note that the requirements to apply for a motorcycle license differ for drivers 18 years of age or younger, and those who are older than 18.

For example, in order to obtain a motorcycle permit, you must first fulfill all the requirements of a Junior Operator License, as well as complete the following:

Provide proof of date of birth and Social Security Number verification.
Have your parent or legal guardian s signature on your Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application.
Complete a driver education course, along with supervised â€œbehind-the-wheelâ€ driving.
Pay the necessary fee.
Pass the written knowledge test.
Pass a vision screening.

Once you are 16-and-a-half years old or older, you will be able to take the road skills test at your local RMV office and obtain a standard Class M license. However, you must have first fulfilled all the permit requirements along with completing the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP).

How do I change my name on my driver’s license?

The state of Massachusetts does not require you to present any documentation when changing your name; however, you will have to report your change of name at a RMV branch.

How do I change my name on my ID card?

To change the name on your ID card, you will need to complete the same MA name change request process as you would for a driver s license:

Visit your local RMV branch
Provide your new Social Security Card
Fill out an Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application
Make a $25 payment (in cash, check or money order) for a duplicate ID card

How do I contact the Social Security Administration for my name change?

Before reporting your name change with the MA RMV, you will need to update the Social Security Administration of your new name. You can make your legal name change in person by visiting a Social Security office near you. After you have completed this process, you must change your name with the RMV.

How do I file a complaint when I believe someone has illegally accessed my DMV record?

If an unauthorized individual has accessed your drivers record, you can file a report with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles by calling their Telephone Center. It is recommended that you contact the RMV so that your information is not accessed illegally ever again.

Online

In Person

When replacing your ID card in person, bring with you proof of identification and payment for the replacement fee. You will also be required to complete a Duplicate ID Card Application, which you can obtain online.

How do I get a hardship license?

How do I obtain a duplicate car title?

If you have a lost car title, then you will need to apply for a car title copy. In Massachusetts, you can get a duplicate copy either online, in person or by mail.

Online

To obtain a duplicate car title copy online, you will need to visit the MA RMV Request a Duplicate Title page. Once there, make sure to have a major credit card ready for payment VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express is accepted.

Be aware that before getting started, you will need to have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) with you. If you are deemed eligible to get a duplicate title online, your new title will be mailed to you within two business days.

In Person

You can apply for a duplicate vehicle title by visiting a nearby RMV branch and presenting proof of identification, a filled out Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title and payment for the duplicate fee.

By Mail

If applying by mail, include a Duplicate Title Application and a $25 payment fee, with your request. Send these items to the below address:

How do I obtain a salvaged car title?

A vehicle will require a salvaged car title if it is deemed a total loss. A total loss constitutes of a vehicle that is damaged, destroyed, ruined by water, fire or another natural disaster to the point of no repair. The owner s insurance company will have to seek a salvage title if any of the aforementioned applies.

How do I obtain car registration?

If your vehicle was purchased from a dealer:

Make sure the dealer fills out the Application for Registration and Title.
Obtain an insurance policy in the state of Massachusetts.
Make sure the back portion of the Certificate of Origin is completed.
Present the Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1) form at a nearby RMV office.

If your vehicle was purchased from a dealer outside of Massachusetts:

Obtain an insurance policy in the state of Massachusetts
Present the Application for Registration and Title along with either the Certificate of Origin of your new car or the previous owner s Certificate of Title.
Make sure the back portion of the Certificate of Origin is completed.
Present the Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1) form at a nearby RMV office.

If your vehicle was purchased from a private party and you need to register used car

Obtain an insurance policy in the state of Massachusetts.
Present the Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1) form along with either the Certificate of Origin of your new car or the previous owner s Certificate of Title.
Mileage must be noted in the transfer of ownership; for example, on the car title.
