Yes. After getting a motorcycle license in Massachusetts, you and your passenger must wear a helmet at all times. Additionally, you must wear goggles, eyeglasses or a protective face shield. An exception to this is if your motorcycle comes with a wind shield or screen.

No. The state of Massachusetts requires drivers who are renewing CDL credentials to do so in person at a local RMV office.

As long as you have a CDL interstate license and are abiding by the driving rules and regulations of other states, then you can use your commercial driving license across the country. A driver must be at least 21 years old to drive between states with a CDL.

- Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter or moped?

You must have a valid MA Class M drivers license, other class of license or learners permit in order to operate a moped or scooter in the state of Massachusetts. You cannot legally operate these vehicles without such credentials.

- Do I need to take a drivers ed course?

Yes. In order to obtain your Junior Operator license in Massachusetts, you must take a drivers education course. This program requires 30 hours of classroom instruction, along with 12 hours of âbehind-the-wheelâ training, and six hours of âin-carâ experience while observing other students.
Additionally, you must fulfill either 40 hours of driving with a parent or legal guardian. There is also the option of completing 30 hours of supervised driving if you have taken a drivers skills development course already.
Your parent or guardian must also participate in two hours of your driver s ed course.

- How can I get a veteran designation on my ID card?

You can add a veteran designation on your ID card application upon the time of renewal. You will need to present an honorable discharge document or form when you apply. There will be no additional fee to do so.

- How do I apply for a commercial drivers license?

Drivers who are 21 or older may apply to obtain an interstate CDL license. However, those drivers who are between 18 and 20 years old can only apply for an intrastate CDL license, which allows them to operate a vehicle only within the state of Massachusetts.
You will have to complete your application process at an RMV office by presenting the following:
- Proof of date of birth
- Proof of signature
- Proof of Massachusetts residency
- Proof of Social Security Number
- A completed Initial CDL Application (if obtaining a CDL permit)
- Payment for any necessary fee
In order to obtain your CDL permit, you must pass a written exam and a vision screening exam. Your permit will be good for a period of two years. Thereafter you will be granted the opportunity to apply for a standard CDL license. A road skills test for the commercial vehicle you wish to operate will be required during this time.

- How do I apply for a learner’s permit?

The state of Massachusetts requires individuals who are 16 to apply for their learners permit in person. Upon your visit to the local DMV office, you should be aware of the following:
- You will have to present a filled out Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application. A parent or legal guardian will be required to sign if you are under 18.
- You will need to pass a vision exam, along with a written exam.
- You will need to pay a $30 fee.
- You will need to present proof of date of birth and Social Security Number
It is strongly advised that you study the Driver s Manual prior to taking your written exam.

- How do I apply for a motorcycle license?

If you are at least 16 years old, you are eligible to apply for a MA motorcycle license. It s important to note that the requirements to apply for a motorcycle license differ for drivers 18 years of age or younger, and those who are older than 18.
For example, in order to obtain a motorcycle permit, you must first fulfill all the requirements of a Junior Operator License, as well as complete the following:
- Provide proof of date of birth and Social Security Number verification.
- Have your parent or legal guardian s signature on your Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application.
- Complete a driver education course, along with supervised âbehind-the-wheelâ driving.
- Pay the necessary fee.
- Pass the written knowledge test.
- Pass a vision screening.
Once you are 16-and-a-half years old or older, you will be able to take the road skills test at your local RMV office and obtain a standard Class M license. However, you must have first fulfilled all the permit requirements along with completing the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP).

- How do I get a duplicate ID card?

In Massachusetts, you have the option to replace ID card credentials in one of three ways: online, in person or by phone.
Online
Visit the MA RMV Duplicate Mass ID page to find out if you are eligible for renewal. If so, make sure you have payment ready for any applicable fee.
In Person
When replacing your ID card in person, bring with you proof of identification and payment for the replacement fee. You will also be required to complete a Duplicate ID Card Application, which you can obtain online.
By Phone
You can replace your ID by calling the RMV Telephone Center. Keep in mind that their operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

- How do I renew my driving permit?

Your Massachusetts permit for driving is only good for two years. The next step would be to apply for your Junior Operator license once you have reached 16-and-a-half years of age.

Keep in mind that liquor ID cards cannot be renewed. Instead, you will need to re-apply for a new one.
Military Members
If you are currently on active duty and stationed elsewhere, you will not be required to renew. However, the MA RMV requires your dependents to complete the renewal process on your behalf.

- How do I renew my medical report for a commercial license?

With your license to drive commercial vehicles, a medical examiner certificate is good for two years. You will receive a notice in the mail when your self-certification is about to expire with proper instructions on how to proceed.

You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a CDL intrastate license, which allows you to only operate a commercial vehicle within Massachusetts. However, if you would like to obtain a CDL interstate license whereby you are allowed to drive a commercial vehicle from one state to another then you must be at least 21.

Some of the restrictions pertaining to your MA learning permit include the following:
- Your passenger seat must be occupied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has been legally driving for at least one year.

- You must have your learner s permit with you at all times.
- You must only drive a passenger vehicle.

If you operate a vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 lbs., then you will be required to hold a United States Department of Transportation (D.O.T.)-approved medical certificate. This also applies to those drivers who operate a vehicle that transports 15 or more passengers, or a vehicle that contains hazardous materials.

If you receive a MA traffic ticket fine while holding a learner s permit, you could face various fees and fines. Additionally, in some instances, depending on the violation you committed, your Massachusetts drivers license can also be suspended.
For example, a Junior Operator License can be suspended in the event you commit any of the following violations:

- Drag racing
- Cellphone use while driving
- Driving without a licensed driver
- Speeding
