Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter or moped?

You can use your class E drivers license in Florida to ride a scooter or moped. But, if the motor is 50 cubic centimeters or more, you need to get a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle only license.

Do I need to take a drivers ed course?

Although you cannot obtain a drivers permit online, you are still required to take a driver s ed course. Before applying for a license, all drivers must complete a driver s education course called Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE). How can I get a veteran designation on my ID card?

You will need to provide a copy of your DD214 or permitted discharge documents. There is a $2 charge as long as you surrender your ID card. You will not have to pay the normal replacement fee, but you are required to take your FL ID card. If you do not take your ID card, you still can get your veteran ID card by paying the $25 replacement fee. Fees may vary.

How do I apply for a commercial drivers license?

The process of obtaining your CDL license requires you to take a series of tests based on the class of CDL you would like to obtain and the endorsements it requires. You can only request a commercial drivers license if you are over 18 years of age. Commercial drivers under 21 years of age are only allowed to drive within Florida. Before applying, you will have to pass:

  • A knowledge test and a road test.
  • A basic skills test.
  • A pre-trip test.
  • A combinations vehicle test (for Class A only).
  • A hazardous materials test, if you expect to drive a vehicle transporting hazardous materials.
  • An air brakes test, if you plan to drive a vehicle with air brakes.
  • A tank vehicle test, if you need to drive a vehicle hauling liquid or gaseous materials in a tank.
  • A school bus test, for school bus drivers only.
  • A doubles/triples test if you are going to drive a vehicle that pulls double or triple trailers.

At the driver license office you will have to provide the following:

  • One document as proof of identity, such as a U.S. passport or a birth certificate.
  • Your Social Security card, a paycheck with your Social Security Number, a W-2 form or any 1099 form as proof of Social Security.
  • Two documents to prove that you reside in Florida such as a deed, a Florida Voter Registration Card, a utility hook up or mail from any government agency.

How do I apply for a learner’s permit?

The minimum age to get your drivers permit is 15 years old. You can only apply in person at a driver license office. To find a driver license office location near you, visit our DMV locator here.

To get your driving permit in Florida, you will first need to complete Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) before applying for a learners permit in person at a DMV. This course can be obtained from approved private providers or in some high schools or through an online drivers ed class available here. Check with your county’s School Board to find schools that offer the TLSAE.

After completing your TSLAE, you should schedule an appointment for a knowledge test at a driver license office or complete the permit test online. To be best prepared, it is recommended that you study the Drivers Study Guide, as well as the Drivers Practice Test. If you choose to take the test in person at a driver license office make sure you bring the following items with you on the day of your test:

  • Your TSLAE completion certificate.
  • A parental consent form. One of your parents has to sign the form at the driver license office. If they cannot go, for whatever reason, the signature must be notarized.
  • One document as proof of your identity. For example, a birth certificate, or a U.S. passport.
  • Your Social Security card, or a Denial Notice from the Social Security Administration.
  • Two official documents that state your current Florida address as proof of FL residence, like utility bills or bank statements. You can get these documents from your parents if you are under 18 years of age.
  • $48 to pay the driver’s license and learner’s permit fee (fee may vary). Cash or check only.

Besides the knowledge test, you will also be required to pass a vision and a hearing test and then, you will be issued a learner’s permit that you can use with certain restrictions.

How do I apply for a motorcycle license?

If you already have a FL driver s license, you can apply for a motorcycle endorsement to your current license or, if you don t have a driver s license yet, you can request a Florida motorcycle license.

If you already have a FL driver s license, the requirements for a motorcycle endorsement are:

  • Be at least 16 years of age, and in case you are under 18 years old, have a Learners Permit for a year without traffic convictions.
  • Have a Class E Florida Driver s license.
  • Have the Basic Rider Course completed

How do I get a duplicate ID card?

In case your FL identification cards got stolen or lost, you can renew ID card credentials using the GoRenew website. You will need to provide your FL ID number, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security Number. You can renew your FL DMV ID card online or in person at the FL DHSMV office. Theres a $25 fee (fee may vary).

Online

To renew online, you need to have your FL ID card with a digital image. Also, your last renewal must have been done in person at a licensing office. You cannot have a FL drivers license and an ID card at the same time.

In Person

To get your commercial driving license medical report renewed, you can go to a local DMV or self certify/update your medical information online. How do I renew my motorcycle license?

Licenses expire every six or eight years. You can renew motorcycle license credentials online or in person.

Online

You can avoid lines renewing your FL license online with the GoRenew website. To renew online, you should be able to pay with a debit or credit card.

In person

Motorcycle license renewal can be done in person by visiting the closest FL DHSMV office and bringing:

  • Proof of identification, like your U.S. passport or birth certificate.
  • Proof of Social Security Number, such as your Social Security card.
  • Proof of residential address, like a utility bill or mail from government agencies.

Military Renewal

If you are actively serving out of Florida in the U.S. army, you are able to proceed with your FL motorcycle license renewal online through the GoRenew website from the FLDHSMV. You can also request a Military Extension Request by calling 850-617-2000. The DHSMV will process your request and send you an extension card that will remain valid for 90 days after being discharged from military service.

You will have to keep the card and you license with you at all times. There is no cost to get a military extension, and it is available to your dependents as well, these include your spouse and your children or step-children under 21 years of age and living with you at your residence.

How does a military member obtain a motorcycle license?

You need to complete a military motorcycle rider course or equivalent and send a notarized copy of the course completion and $32 ($25 for the replacement license fee, plus $7 for the endorsement fee) to the Division of Driver Licenses. You can pay by check or money order payable to the Division of Motorist Services.

Remember to request a replacement license with a motorcycle endorsement. Also, include in the letter: your name, military mailing address, drivers license number and birthdate.

What happens to my commercial driver license if I am convicted of a DUI?

If you are found driving in Florida with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.04 percent or above, you will immediately be charged with Driving under the Influence (DUI). As a result, your FL CDL will be suspended and you will not be allowed to drive any commercial car for a minimum of a year, or three years if you were transporting hazardous materials when you were stopped. During the time of disqualification, hardship eligibility will not be an option for you.
