Am I required to take a motorcycle training course?
To obtain a motorcycle license in Utah, it is not required to take a motorcycle training course. To receive a motorcycle license, the applicant must obtain a passing status on the motorcycle skills driving examination administered at a local DLD office. However, the motorcycle skills driving examination may be waived with an ERC or BRC waiver.

Certain schools provide a five hour-long Experienced Rider Course (ERC). The course requires motorcycle riding experience and over 2000 miles on the motorcycle. If the applicant receives a passing status on the ERC test a motorcycle skills driving waiver will be provided.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Beginning Rider Course (BRC) is a beginner s riding course that once successfully completed waives the motorcycle skills driving examination.

Am I required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle?
The Utah DLD encourages helmet use when riding motorcycles to ensure safety on the road. It is illegal for a person under the age of 18 to operate a motorcycle on streets or highways without proper headgear. The headgear must meet DOT standards and comply with Federal guidelines. If above the age of 18, a helmet is not required.

Can I renew my commercial drivers license online?
Commercial driver s licenses cannot be renewed online or through mail. To renew a CDL, visit a local DLD office and provide the current expired CDL, a valid DOT Card, a CDL Medical Self Certification, and a renewal fee of $40 (subject to change).

Endorsement renewals cannot be completed online either. In the case of commercial driving license citations, suspensions, and expirations, a regular license test of 25 questions will be administered additionally to renew a CDL.

Can I take the DMV written test online?
There is no option of taking a Utah drivers permit test online. The written examination must be completed at a local DLD office. An appointment is required to be made in order to schedule a written examination. Walk-ins are accepted but do not guarantee testing. Although the knowledge test is not available online, a drivers license practice test is available online offering questions resembling those asked for the official examination.

The knowledge test costs $25 at the DLD office, covers up to three attempts, and is subject to price change.

Can I use my state CDL anywhere in the United States?
Using the Utah CDL anywhere in the United States depends on the chosen category of commercial motor vehicle operation that the applicant has self-certified. Applicants that have are certified interstate (non-expected or expected) can drive between states using their CDL. Those with an intrastate certification can only use their CDL within Utah. Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter or moped?
To operate a scooter in Utah, a motorcycle driver s license is not required. To ride a moped, a drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement is needed. The Motorcycle Operator Manual provides informational graphics and explanations regarding motor operated vehicles. The manual offers applicants specific license requirements for a range of motor operated vehicles.

Do I need to take a drivers ed course?
A driver s education course is only required if the applicant is 18 years or younger. Driver s ed requires the applicant to have a UT learners permit before taking the course and may be completed at:
  • A local high school.
  • A commercial driver education school.
  • An approved online/home study driver education.

If you are from another US state and you hold a driver s education certificate of having completed at least 18 hours classroom, 6 hours driving and 6 hours observation, the certificate may be accepted. If you are 19 years or older, driver s ed is not required.

How can I get a veteran designation on my ID card?
The Utah DLDgives applicants who are at least 21 years old the option of adding a veteran indicator when applying for an ID card. The veteran indicator can only be added if acceptable evidence of honorable discharge from the US Military is provided at a local DLD office during time of application.

Acceptable forms of evidence include:

  • DD214
  • A Record/Notice of Separation for WWII veterans

How do I apply for a commercial drivers license?
To apply for a Utah CDL license after choosing the CDL class and any related endorsements, the following must be presented to a local CDL certified DLD office:
  • DOT card and self-certification form
  • Utah Drivers License Application
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Two proofs of Utah residency
  • Proof of passing written examination
  • Proof of passing vision examination
  • Payment for the non-refundable fee of $40 and endorsement fee of $7 each (prices subject to change)

After these steps, a commercial learners permit will be issued. The following is required for a commercial drivers license:

  • Completed CDL training (company or approved third-party)
  • Passing status on the CDL skills test

How do I apply for a learner’s permit?
To apply for a learners permit in Utah, the applicant must be at least 15 years old. A series of documents and exams, along with an application fee, questionnaire, and financial responsibility signature, must be given to the DLD office for approval.

If the applicant is at least 15 years old, the following must be provided:

How do I apply for a motorcycle license?
To qualify to receive a Utah motorcycle license, the applicant must request a duplicate drivers license or renew the current drivers license. The renewed/duplicated license will include a motorcycle endorsement. For a new drivers license with an M endorsement, the following must be presented at a local DLD office:
  • The applicant s current Utah driver license
  • Two proofs of Utah residency
  • Proof of passing the 25-question written examination
  • Proof of passing the vision examination
  • Completed medical questionnaire
  • A non-refundable duplicate or renewal license fee

How do I renew my driving permit?

How do I renew my medical report for a commercial license?
When trying to apply for a CDL license, it is important to note that a DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months. DOT Cards are subject to the medical examiner s expiration date based on monitored conditions. To renew the medical report, the applicant must have a DOT physical examination conducted by a licensed medical examiner.

For medical certification and renewal to be completed, the applicant must submit the Commercial Driver License Medical Self Certification:

  • Every two years.
  • When renewing DOT card or Utah Intrastate Waiver card.

How do I renew my motorcycle license?
The standard driver license renewal process applies when trying to renew a motorcycle license. To renew a motorcycle license,an applicant must visit a local DLD office.

How does a military member obtain a motorcycle license?
The state of Utah accepts completion courses of a certified, basic motorcycle training course given outside the state of Utah. For the DLD to add the Utah motorcycle license endorsement, the military applicant would have to be present at a local DLD office and follow procedures for an M endorsement such as providing proof of residency and passing the written examination. With a valid card certifying basic motorcycle training course completion outside of Utah, the skills examination will be waived and a motorcycle endorsement will be issued.

How long do I need my learners permit before I can get my drivers license?
If you are 17 years old or younger, you must hold aUtah learning permitfor six months before being able to apply for a Utah driver license.

If the applicant turns 18 while holding the learners permit, a driver license application may be completed. If an applicant is 18 or older when applying for the learning permit, the six-month permit holding is not applied.

If the learning permit is from another state, the permit can be used to meet the six-month requirement.

How long will it take to get my new ID card?
Upon completion of the Utah ID card application process, the DLD will grant the applicant a temporary photo identification card. This temporary identification card will be used until the completed identification card arrives in the applicant s mail. The mailed ID card can take approximately four to six weeks to arrive. The official ID card is only valid for 5 years, requires renewal, and cannot be possessed with a driver s license.

How often do I need to renew my CDL license?
A Utah CDL must be renewed every five years. When renewing a CDL license, the following are required to be presented at a Utah DMV:

The expired CDL card:

If applicable:

Is there a minimum age I have to be to get a commercial drivers license?
The minimum age to apply for a Commercial Drivers License is 18 years old. Applicants must have at least one year of driving experience. If 21 years or younger, the CDL is only applicable to intrastate operation and excludes the following endorsements:

What are the age restrictions to ride a motorcycle?
To receive a Utah motorcycle driving license, applicants under the age of 19 must hold a motorcycle learner permit for two months. There are no restrictions three to six months after holding the permit. Certain learner permit restrictions include:
  • No passengers accompanying the driver
  • No motorcycle driving from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  • No motorcycle driving on highways a speed limit higher than 60 mph

Additional age restrictions include:

  • Riders under 16 may not operate any motor vehicle on Utah roads or highways.
  • Riders under 18operating an off highway vehicle and passengers must wear appropriate headgear.

What are the available commercial license endorsements?
When receiving a license to drive commercial vehicles, Utah offers the following endorsements:
  • H: Hazardous Materials
  • N: Tanker
  • X: Tanker/Hazardous Materials Combination
  • T: Doubles and Triples
  • P: Passenger
  • S: School Bus

Endorsements come with a $7 fee (subject to change) and may require additional CDL applications, examinations, and background checks.

What are the fees associated with an ID card?
All identification card fees are administered by the Utah DLD and are subject to change. ID card fees include:
  • ID card application fee: $18
  • ID card renewal fee: $18
  • ID card duplicate fee: $18
  • ID card application with a disability fee: $13

If your ability to drive is impaired because of medical or age-related reasons, your Utah drivers license must be surrendered at a Utah DLD office.

What are the learners permit restrictions during my first year?
If you are at least 15 years old and you hold a UT permit for driving, a motor vehicle may only be operated if:
  • A parent, legal guardian, or approved driving instructor is seated beside you.
  • You have immediate possession of your learners permit.
  • It is before the hours of 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

If you are 18 years old with a UT learners permit, you may only drive a vehicle if:

  • A licensed driver, 21 or older, is seated beside you.

If you are at least 19 years old, you may only drive if:

What are the penalties for getting a traffic ticket with a driver’s permit?
If a person under 21 or with a learner s permit gets issued a traffic ticket, their driving privileges are in jeopardy. If a driver has collected 70 or more points on their license or permit in a three-year period, they may face:
  • A hearing.
  • Subsequent suspension.
  • Denial of driving period.

The suspension period may range according to the judge. The judge may also vary the points plus or minus 10 percent for traffic violations.

What exams do I need to pass to get a motorcycle license?

What happens to my commercial driver license if I am convicted of a DUI?
If convicted of a first offense DUI, a driver that holds a commercial driving licensein Utah is disqualified from driving a commercial motor vehicle for no less than one year. If convicted of a DUI while transporting hazardous material, the disqualification is for no less than three years. After two or more offenses, CDL drivers may be disqualified for life, if involving two or more incidents.

What is an ID card?
A Utah ID card is a state-issued form of documentation given to Utah residents to verify personal identity. It is not required to hold a Utah state identification card but it is a useful form of identification that can be used for cashing checks, travel, law enforcement, etc.

What is the passing score for a written test?
The written examination is composed of 50 questions. The applicant cannot miss more than 10 questions of the 50-question examination to be considered for a Utah learners permit. The questions are composed of road signs knowledge, traffic laws, and driving techniques of Utah. To pass a score of at least80 percent is needed.

Applicants who are approved asylees or refugees can bring acceptable proof of their status to the DLD office and be eligible to take the Utah written knowledge test with the help of an approved and certified translator.

What test do I need to take for my learners permit?
For a UT learners permit, a passing score on the 50 question written knowledge test is required. Applicants are also required to successfully pass a vision, physical, and mental fitness exam.

The knowledge examination consists of road signs and written examination. The road signs portion refers to common road signs and their meaning. The written portion refers to class D driving license knowledge available in the Utah Driver Handbook.

What tests do I have to take to obtain a CDL?
To obtain a Utah commercial driving license a series of examinations must be completed with a satisfactory score. These include but are not limited to knowledge, skills, and endorsement examinations.

The knowledge examination is mandatory to all CDL drivers and includes questions based on accidentprocedures, basic vehicle control, mountain driving, space management, etc. Upon completion of the written examination, a commercial learners permit can be issued to prepare for the skills examination.

The skills examination checks the applicants capability and skills of CDL vehicle safety, control, driving. The examination consists of three parts:

  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Basic vehicle control
  • On-road driving

When does my ID card expire?
The ID card expires five years upon issuance. Upon expiration, the ID card may be renewed at a local DLD office. It is illegal to posses both a Utah drivers license and a Utah ID card at the same time.

If your ability to drive is impaired because of medical or age-related reasons, your Utah drivers license must be surrendered at a Utah DLD office. A Utah state identification card will be given free of charge. If in possession of an unexpired DMV ID card and applying for a Utah drivers license, the ID card must be surrendered before receiving the valid Utah driver s license.

Who can sign for my permit or license if I am under 18?
A parent or legal guardian must accompany the applicant when completing the Utah Drivers Permit Application. Getting drivers permits in Utah requires a parent or legal guardian signature for the applicant to be placed under their financial responsibility, if applicant is 17 and under.

The parent or legal guardian can choose to withdraw the permit signature under any circumstances.
