- Do I need to turn in my damaged car title?
- You may or may not have to turn in your damaged car title to the North Dakota Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. If your car title is damaged and you apply for a duplicate car title, you should contact the ND MVDat 701-328-2725 and ask them if you should relinquish your damaged car title to receive a new car title.

- How can I transfer a car title if I have a lien on it?
- If there is a lien on your car title, a lien release must be provided or the lien holder must sign off on the sale of your vehicle. Otherwise, the ND vehicle title will not be issued. If there is a lien on your car title, you must submit the name and mailing address of the lien holder, the loan account number, and a copy of the out of state registration, if applicable, when transferring ownership of a vehicle in North Dakota.
If the lien on your car title has been met, make sure that the lien holder has completed the “Seller’s Assignment & Warranty of Title” section of the certificate of title.

- To report a stolen car title, you may file a police report at the nearest police station. If your car title information has been stolen, you may be protected from unlawful use of your vehicle and personal information. The North Dakota MVD can only issue a replacement title if the original one was lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed. - Owner of and purchaser must fill out part 1 and part 3 of the Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle.
- A Damaged Disclosure Statement must be filled out by the seller if the vehicle is less than nine years old.
- Owner must provide the odometer information on a vehicle less than 10 years old.
- Pay title transfer fee of $5.
If applicable, you will also be responsible for the 5 percent excise tax of the purchase price of your new or used vehicle. Fees are subject to change.

- How do I transfer the title of my RV?
- To transfer title of your RV or recreational vehicle in the state of North Dakota, follow these steps:
- Complete a Notarized Bill of Sale, if bought used
- Complete and sign Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle
- Pay title $5 title fee
Also, you may request that your RV be registered as a travel trailer, which would exempt you from having to title and register your vehicle. You would then pay $20 per year to the ND DOT for this exemption.

- How long does it take to receive my replacement car title after ordering online?
- In the state of North Dakota, the owner of the vehicle must certify the reason they are applying for a duplicate car title and may apply in one of two ways:
- By mail
- In person at a MVD location

- If a family member dies and leaves their car to you, then you are responsible for completing a car title transfer to your name. To change the name on the title of an inherited vehicle, you must do the following:
- A Personal Representative of the deceased and new owner must fill out part 1 and part 3 of the Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle
- Provide a copy of proof of Personal Representative documents to the ND DOT
- Provide odometer information on vehicles less than 10 years old
- Deceased person’s representative must fill out a Damaged Disclosure Statement if vehicle is less than nine years old
- Pay $5 title transfer fee
If the car is financed, the new owner must also provide the lien holder information on their application for car title transfer. Fees subject to change.

- Will I need to present proof of insurance to get a car title replacement?
- No, it is not required to present proof of insurance in order to get a ND duplicate car title. The only required document you need to present is a completed and signed Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Motor Vehicle. Insurance requirements are not enforced through the car title application process, though North Dakota law does require every vehicle to be insured with at least minimum liability car insurance. A law enforcement officer will verify your car insurance if you are pulled over for any reason.
