- Are there times I won’t be allowed to renew registration?

Yes, you will not be allowed to renew your Connecticut auto registration if:
- You have had your car registration suspended.
- You owe payment of property taxes.
- You have unpaid traffic or parking tickets.

- Can somebody else renew my registration for me?

Yes, another person can renew your car registration for you. If the CT DMV determines that you are eligible to renew car registration online, supply the person renewing your vehicle registration with your PIN, class code and license plate number, as well as proof of your CT auto insurance.
If you are renewing someone else s car registration by mail or in person, make sure you have all the necessary documents and method of payment for applicable fees before heading out to the DMV or mailing the application.

- Do I need to turn in my damaged registration?

If your Connecticut registration documents are damaged or mutilated beyond legibility, you must apply for a car registration copy with the CT Department of Motor Vehicles. - Does a motorized scooter need to be registered?

The CT Department of Motor Vehicles classifies any vehicle that has a seat height of at least 26 inches and a motor with less than 50 cc as a motor-driven vehicle. Motor-driven vehicles do not have to be registered under Connecticut law. However, if your vehicle is classified as a motorcycle, it must be registered. The procedure to register motorcycles in Connecticut is similar to getting car registration certification for the first time. Emission testing is usually required in Connecticut for new car registrations, as well as when renewing car registration. Emission testing is not required if your vehicle fits one of the categories below:
- Not older than four years.
- A gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more

- How can I renew my vehicle registration?

Your Connecticut vehicle registration is valid for two years and must be renewed before the expiration date as late fees apply. The CT DMV allows you to renew your car registration by mail, online or in person.
You will receive a renewal notice in the mail two months before your car registration expires. The renewal notice contains the following information:
- Car registration expiration date
- Vehicle registration renewal fee
- Emission testing requirements
- Delinquent traffic tickets (All unpaid traffic citations must be paid for before renewin car registration documentation)
To renew your car registration online, the renewal notice you received must contain a Personal Identification Number. If you are eligible to renew vehicle registration online, visit the CT DMV website and follow the instructions.
If you are renewing by mail, send in your completed registration renewal notice and payment of renewal fees to the following address:

You might also be required to send proof of payment of property taxes and applicable emission testing documents.

- How do I obtain car registration?

To register your vehicle in Connecticut, you must visit a DMV Hub or Limited Service Office and follow the steps below:
- Provide your current Certificate of Title.
- Present your current Connecticut Insurance ID card.
- Submit a completed Application for Registration and Certificate of Title (form H-13).
- Present proof of identification.
- Pay registration fees.
You must also complete a Bill of Sale and pay the sales tax on the car registration certificate if the vehicle was not previously registered in your name or was recently purchased.
If you are registering a vehicle with an out of state car registration in Connecticut, you must first verify your vehicle identification number (VIN) and get an emission inspection.
If the owner of the vehicle cannot register the car in person at the CT DMV, an original Power of Attorney (POA) must be provided by the agent of the individual applying for registration. Furthermore, the agent must present proof of identification for himself or herself and for the owner listed on the registration application.
If you are registering a leased vehicle, then you must also present your leasing license on file with the Connecticut DMV, in addition to providing an original Power of Attorney. Furthermore, the name and address of the leasing company must be included in the registration application.
Note that if you have any outstanding property tax payments or parking tickets, or your registration privilege have been previously suspended, you will not be allowed to register your vehicle in Connecticut.
