Yes, all residents of the state of Connecticut must carry proof of financial responsibility to legally operate a motor vehicle within the state. This includes having valid license plates and vehicle registration. The two types of liability auto insurance required under CT state law are:

- If I own multiple vehicles, am I required to have them all insured?

All Connecticut residents must carry proof of financial responsibility if they wish to legally operate a motor vehicle within the state. - What proof of insurance can I provide when registering my car?

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles requires you to present proof of auto insurance when registering your vehicle for the first time and when renewing your car registration. The CT DMV only accepts a declaration page or valid permanent insurance card identifying the vehicle as proof of financial responsibility. Temporary insurance cards, bills, or binders are not accepted by the Connecticut DMV.

- What type of car insurance am I required to have?

You must have car insurance to be able to legally operate a motor vehicle in Connecticut. The two types of liability auto insurance required by law are:
- Bodily injury liability: This pays for bodily injury to others involved in a collision with you.
- Property damage liability insurance: This policy covers damages you may cause in an auto accident to vehicles or the property of others.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: This insurance type pays for your medical bills thatresult from a car accident caused by an uninsured driver or a driver who does not have suitable auto insurance to pay for your medical bills.
Insurance companies also offer optional, additional insurance such as collision coverage. Collision insurance pays for physical damages to your car as the result of your vehicle colliding with an object. Comprehensive coverage pays for damages to your vehicle from fire, severe weather, vandalism, floods and theft.

- What will happen if I fail to get or keep car insurance?

Connecticut state laws require your car insurance company to notify the Connecticut DMV of all active policy and any policy cancellations to always stay up to date with your auto coverage.
If the CT DMV learns of an insurance policy cancelation, you will receive a warning notice and be expected to buy vehicle coverage. Failure to respond to the initial warning might lead to a suspension and prevent you from renewing or registering your vehicle.

- Which types of vehicles need to be insured?

All motor vehicles operated on CT highways must carry proof of minimum liability vehicle insurance. This includes passenger vehicles, commercial motor vehicles and motorcycles. In addition, CDL holders are required to report car insurance coverage with the DMV once a year.
On the other hand, non-commercial vehicles must maintain liability vehicle coverage to have valid license plates. Proof of car insurance needs to be presented every two years when renewing car registrations and registering vehicles with the CT DMV for the first time.
